Is the “Best” Price always the “Best Price”?

You’ve seen and heard all the ads but who do you trust? Is price the only thing to consider when looking for someone to repair your vehicle? Just remember what your grandpa used to say, “If it sounds too good to be true – it probably is”, or “There is no such thing as a “free lunch”. Before you clip that coupon do your research.

The first step is to “know” your vehicle. Read your owners manual cover to cover. You can also search the Internet about tips and maintenance on your specific vehicle. (The ASE web site is full of great information)

The second step is finding a quality service provider. Your vehicle is one of your largest investments so make sure you feel comfortable with your provider at all times. Check with the Better Business Bureau, AAA, and your local Chamber of Commerce for recommendations. Ask for referrals from your friends and co-workers. Look at the service providers credentials. Do you recognize any of them? Are their technicians ASE certified, if so in what areas? Do they specialize in any types of vehicles? Do they have “up to date” equipment? Is the facility neat and clean? Do you feel comfortable when you walk in? Are you greeted promptly and professionally? Ask if you can meet one of the technicians. Does his/her appearance meet your approval? Ask yourself, “Would I want this person working on my vehicle?”

The third step is to build a relationship with your provider. It is impossible to establish a relationship when you are “jumping” from provider to provider. There are great rewards in establishing a solid relationship. Make sure you always communicate with your provider. If you are not satisfied or do not understand something – ask questions. Most problems arise when the communication lines break down. Remember no one is perfect, and we all make mistakes; it’s how your provider corrects the mistakes that count.

The fourth step is establishing a budget. Once you find a provider that meets your expectations they can assist you in establishing a budget for your vehicle repairs and maintenance. Most vehicle problems occur when you least expect them. Make sure you set enough money aside each month to handle the unexpected.

The fifth step is proper maintenance. Proper maintenance combined with high quality repairs will keep the unexpected repairs to a minimum. Again your owners manual and service provider are great resources for this information. By performing routine maintenance on your vehicle you will add years to the life of your vehicle, saving you time and money.

In closing, know your vehicle and your provider. If you combine these two things together you are sure to have many years of trouble free enjoyable driving.
